DELAIN, a kingdom of unknown location. The land is divided into baronies, including four large ones named for the direction in which they lie from the castle. Closer to the castle lie the Inner Baronies, and the Near Towns are set between the city and the Eastern Barony. In the northern reaches of the kingdom are the Far Forests.
The castle is located in the center of Delain City, circling the Plaza of the Needle where all royal coronations are held. The Plaza is named for the imposing tower which stands three-hundred and forty feet above it. The bottom of the Needle houses the Royal Court of Delain, also called Peyna's Court after its former judge-general. A back passageway in the court leads to a stairway that ascends the entire height of the Needle. At the very top is a two room cell where royal prisoners are kept, since it is illegal to execute those of royal lineage. Previous occupants have included Leven Valera the Black Duke of the Southern Barony, and Peter, son of Roland the Good.
The city is also home to the Church of the Great Gods, a squat stone tower on Third East-ard Alley. A popular place of worship for the people of Delain, it collapsed in a snow storm in the reign of Thomas the Light-Bringer.
The castle can be entered through a number of gates, including the Dungeon Gate on the northeast side of the Needle, the Peddler's Gate on the southwest side, or the West Gate, a lesser gate through which servants usually enter.
The castle itself contains numerous dungeons and vaults, including the King's Treasure Room, where visitors will find mounds of gold coins, stacks of gold bars, and bins labelled according to the precious gems they hold. A large storeroom houses millions of napkins woven in the reign of Kyla the Good. The lowest point in the castle is the Dungeon of Inquistion, full of racks and manacles.
Should a visitor climb the Eastern Tower they would reach the highest point of the castle, a small chamber that affords one a fantastic view of Delain, surpassed only by the view from the cell at the top of the Needle. The chamber is rarely visited, and is inhabited by a large number of bats.
The castle is is furnished with a good number of private chambers for the royal family. In the morning room of the queen a visitor can view the magnificent dollhouse of Queen Sasha, exquisitely detailed and endowed with fully functioning appliances. The king's sitting room is graced with a number of hunting trophies killed by King Roland, including the rare head of a dragon. Should a visitor enter a back passageway leading to the laundry room, they may find a secret passageway. At the end of this corridor is a small panel that allows one to look through the amber eyes of the dragon trophy into the sitting room below.
Delain has been a monarchy for thousands of years, the current lineage dating back five hundred years to the reign of Kyla, famous for instituting programs to employ every able citizen in the kingdom. Her intent was to make good to the people following the insane rule of Alan II. Her lineage continued down into the time of Roland, husband of Sasha and father to Peter and Thomas. Roland was later poisoned, the blame placed upon his eldest son. Peter was later exonerated when the murder was proven to be the work of Flagg, the court magician. Peter took the throne and Flagg vanished, his whereabouts unknown.
