Springfield is situated on an unknown ocean and occupies the banks of Springfield River. Springfield is bounded on the west by a range of mountains dominated by the Murderhorn at over 13,600 feet. Beyond the mountains lies the desert of the Springfield Badlands. To the north is Springfield National Forest and Springfield Gorge ("the third most beautiful gorge in the state") which feeds Springfield Lake.
Springfield was founded in 1796 by Jebediah Springfield and a group of people who didn't want to marry their cousins. Fort Springfield is a Civil War battle site. The town motto is "A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man." At one time Springfield was one of "America's Four Hundred Fastest Growing Cities." Its population at the last census was determined to be 30,720.
Springfield is a diverse city with many schools, colleges, museums and other cultural amenities. It is a manufacturing center with a harbor, an international airport, railroads and interstate highways. It's chief industry is the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Its other exports include Duff Beer, fake vomit, galoshes and boxes.
For the traveler, Springfield offers many attractions including the Escalator to Nowhere, the Giant Magnifying Glass, the World's Largest Speedbump, and the famous Springfield Mystery Spot. The Springfield Mall and The South Street Squid are major commerical developments for shopping, entertainment and dining. Springfield is served by number of hotels and motels as well as a number of fine restaurants and fast food outlets. (Map)
